Have you spit on a soldier today?

March 18th, 2009 | Category: Politics

The presidental campaign was evidentally an educational experience for Michelle Obama. First, it finally made her proud of her country for the first time. Secondly, she decided, if her husband was elected president, military families would be her cause.

She made her first trip outside Washington as first lady last Thursday to Fort Bragg, N.C. where she visited with military families.

“Our soldiers and their families have done their duty. They do it without complaint. And we as a grateful nation must do ours and do everything in our power to honor them by supporting them,” she said at the Fort Bragg Community Center.

Absolutely True!!

Except, I question her words!

Are they a smoke screen, a slight of hand to divert our attention from the abominable policies being considered by her husband? While she is praising our military and the MSM is focused on her with sweetness and light, he is proposing a plan that would force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries.

Our veterans are our nation’s heroes. They answer the call when our country needs them the most. They serve their country with pride, honor, and courage. For their sacrifice and their service we DO owe them a debt of genuine gratitude. Not merely lip service designed to garner votes or to erect a facade of support.

A policy like this would amount to a betrayal to our troops.

So, if it’s your inclination to spit on a soldier, you will need to stand in line behind the President.

Color me confused

March 12th, 2009 | Category: Politics

On Monday, Obama signed an executive order lifting the executive order that President Bush signed in 2001 that prohibited federal funding of stem cell research that required the killing of new embryos.

He said the purpose of his order is to remove limitations so that America’s scientists could explore human stem cells in the hopes of finding new discoveries and new therapies for the benefit of humankind.

Fast forward to yesterday, Wednesday. Obama signed H.R. 1105, the “Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009.

The text of Section 509 of the Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009, reads as follows:

SEC. 509. (a) None of the funds made available in this Act may be used for—
(1) the creation of a human embryo or embryos for research purposes; or
(2) research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death greater than that allowed for research on fetuses in utero under 45 CFR 46.204(b) and section 498(b) of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 289g(b)). (b) For purposes of this section, the term ‘‘human embryo or embryos’’ includes any organism, not protected as a human subject under 45 CFR 46 as of the date of the enactment of this Act, that is derived by fertilization, parthenogenesis, cloning, or any other means from one or more human gametes or human diploid cells.

Huh?

Is this just another example of Obama’s slight of hand; saying one thing publicly to keep the kudos coming while doing something entirely different in private…another example of his words not matching his deeds?

Did he really not know what he was signing?

Silence Implies Agreement

February 23rd, 2009 | Category: Politics, I couldn't agree more

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

I am getting the impression that my family is ready to stick a tin foil hat on my head and shove me into a corner. I don’t think they believe that America is truly in as much trouble as I do NOW, not years from now. Or, that they believe that we peons can do anything about it.

I believe it’s true that the economic decisions being made today will continue to be paid for by our kids, grandkids, and their kids. But I am afraid that will be least of their worries if something isn’t done to stop our meteoric hurtle towards fascism.

When the self ordained messiah signed the stimulus bill in Colorado and the housing bill in Arizona, there were peaceful demonstrations protesting the massive spending these bills will entail. Did you hear about that?

High school students laughed at what was being promoted. They could see right through the rhetoric and lies. Unfortunately, tears would have been a better response as they will be saddled with the bill for years to come. Did you hear about that?

Maybe we should all cry tears because some high school students are smarter than our President. Except that I think he knows exactly what he is doing.

If it takes the government’s hands reaching deep into our pockets to make us get off our collective duffs and make our voices heard, then I say go for it. I am not so cynical that I don’t believe that they aren’t heard. Power is the name of the game here and they don’t want to lose it. For now we hold that power in our hands. Barely.

There are peaceful demonstrations being planned all over the country. One is in my own backyard.

Michelle Malkin is listing some of the locations on her blog. Tea Party

Then this morning I read an article written by the editorial staff of the Augusta Chronicle .

It may be said that the meek shall inherit the earth but, by golly, it’s the squeaky wheel that gets the grease.

I get all kinds of “atta boys” when I send email, faxes, and telephone calls to my Senators and Representatives, both state and federal, expressing my opinions.
But, w
hen I suggest that it might be prudent that we attend our local demonstration, what I am getting is a condescending smile or the eqivalent to a pat on the head.

I am a firm believer that silence implies agreement.

Our Tax System, Explained in Beer

October 24th, 2008 | Category: Politics
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.” Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share’?
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same percent, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

“I only got a dollar out of the $20,”declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,” but he got $10!”

“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got TEN times more than I!”

“That’s true!!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!”

“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.
