My husband has been busy the last few days building organizer systems for both our closets. In the process, he found some old photos he had tucked away. This one was taken on our honeymoon in New Orleans.

Seven Days in December

I set aside seven days
To clean my house this year.

My husband asked, “Is that enough?”
I said, “Don’t worry dear:
I’ll mark it on my calendar
So I will remember.

I think I’ll plan it for sometime
Midway through December.

On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
I will dust and mop in between activities
And time to Christmas shop.

On Thursday I will make the bed
And feed the potted plants.

On Friday I will do the dishes
If I get a chance.

On Saturday I’ll need to play
Just a little bit.

On Saturday I will rest and pray
To keep me spiritually fit.

So dear, don’t worry about the house
Just wait until year’s end.

Why should I do all year through
What will wait ’till then?”

A Campin’ We Will Go

Except for short trips around town, which she loves, Allie had not been in the car alot. She had never been camping with us. She is a country dog and not used to being confined to a lease. We were apprehensive, but she did great. She loved the camper and made herself right at home. It took a couple of days for her to get used to “going on a lease” when we stopped, but that came, too. She loved running untethered when we got home, but I am sure she will be ready to go on another trip.

The power of observation

I am taking an onine art course on observation. Part of our assignment is to watch a video then write a short story based on the sights that left the most impression on us. The video looks like it might have been taken at a living history museum. I have been to many and really enjoy going to them.

The story had to include these two sentences:
Once upon a time, in a tiny hamlet…
The light poured in….illuminating…….

I’ve never written a story before and it certainly shows, but this is what I wrote:

I’m going home! It’s been years, 6 to be exact, since I’ve traveled this road. Still, little has changed. Oh, I’ve noticed the occasional new home like the modern red brick Tudor whose likeness is reflected in the still river that runs behind it. Thankfully, their presence does little to mar the beauty of the green, rolling hills that surround it.

I’ve deliberately chosen my favorite time of day to return. Dawn….first light… a new day…a new beginning. This day has risen fair and fresh. You can smell the scents of peace in the cool, damp air; feel the cleanliness in the dew that has gathered on the grasses overnight washing away yesterday’s dust.
Then I see it. My ancestral home. The home where my grandmother was born and her mother before that. The home, where as a child, I spent many glorious hours.
If I close my eyes, I can imagine my grandmother there still. I remember how, dressed in identical bonnets and aprons, we used to tend to the gardens. Back then, although I’m not sure I’ve improved a lot, I couldn’t tell a weed from a squash and, after uprooting several of the latter, I was assigned the job of keeping the chickens and the cat at bay. Sensing my unhappiness, my ever wise grandmother devised a story-telling game to lessen my disappointment. Each day we would add a new adventurous chapter, but it always started like this….
Once upon a time, in a tiny hamlet there lived the Royal Keeper of Farm Animals…..
Wow! The Royal Keeper of Farm Animals. I loved it and proudly adopted the large and significant title as my own, quickly shortening it to The RKFA.
Among my favorite stories of the many that we wove on those warm summer mornings was The Case of the Missing Eggs.
One of the most important jobs assigned to The RKFA was to gather the hen eggs. One morning she went to the chicken coop and found no eggs. Realizing that something or someone beat her to the them, she started searching for clues. After wandering along the river, past a trickling brook and into the forest she finally found the thief’s trail. It led right to the next neighbor’s kitchen. Sure enough, there they were. Sitting in a woven basket on a polished wood trestle table. The light poured in from the kitchen window softly illuminating the right side of each egg giving them a deceptively smooth appearance. Hugging the shadowy wall, The RKFA slipped into the kitchen. Just as she was about to transfer the eggs into her own woven basket the neighbor saw her. Insisting that the eggs were his, he demanded that The RKFA describe hers to him. “No problem,” she says. Without even looking she continued, “Mine are pale yellowish-white, oval shaped, wider and rounder on one end, narrower and more pointed on the other with a slightly rough texture.” Now the neighbor, not ever having really observed the eggs he was stealing, insisted that the eggs in the basket on his table could not belong to The RKFA because they were smooth. “Just look at them!”, he exclaimed. “They are as smooth as summer cherries. If you can prove me wrong, you may take them.”
“You are wrong!”, declared The RKFA. “While these eggs may look smooth, they are not. Just feel them.”
After feeling the eggs, the neighbor shamefacedly admitted to taking them and promised he would ask first before doing it again.

Yes, I am going home…

My husband asked me if I really got all of that from the video. I guess I did. I really don’t know where all this story came from but it was fun writing it.
